Fujikawa comes up short
MIAMI » Moanalua's Tadd Fujikawa missed the cut in the Nationwide Tour's Miccosukee Championship yesterday, finishing his second round with a 73 to land two strokes off the number.
Marc Turnesa is in the clubhouse at 12 under par, four strokes ahead of Andrew Johnson, Jon Mills and Jon Turcott.
Honu even series with Sharks
Stephen Chapman and Mat Gamel had three hits a-piece to propel the North Shore Honu past the Honolulu Sharks 8-3 in Hawaii Winter Baseball yesterday at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park. Gamel hit a home run, drove in three runs and scored twice. Honu starter Bud Norris pitched four solid innings of two-hit ball to earn the win, improving his ERA to 3.38 for the season.
The Honu improve to a league best 17-7, while the Sharks drop to 12-11-1.
» Chad Tracy drove in Ian Gac with a home run in the fourth inning and the West Oahu CaneFires beat the Waikiki BeachBoys 3-1 in the nightcap.
K.C. Herren had three hits for the CaneFires, while Gac and Craig Gentry each had three. Keisaku Itokazu threw six shutout innings to get the win and improve to 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA. Reid Santos picked up a hold and Ken Miyamoto nailed down the save in the ninth.
Hawaii's Ibera wins judo gold
Taylor Ibera of Honolulu defeated Veronica Prado and Katelyn Bouyssou to win the gold in the women's 44 kg division of the USA Judo Senior B-Level Point Tournament in Montreal yesterday.
Top-ranked judoka Taylor Takata of Wahiawa was upset in the 66 kg final. Kenny Hashimoto took the gold, with Takata earning silver.
Harper, Whitford outrun PacWest field
Brigham Young-Hawaii's Golden Harper ran 8 kilometers in 26 minutes, 23 seconds to beat HPU's Brandon Laan by 28 seconds to win the individual title at the PacWest Championships yesterday. Hawaii Pacific won the team title.
» UH-Hilo's Amanda Whitford won the women's race, running an 18:54 5K to finish 17 seconds ahead of UH-Hilo's Kelly Rogers. Strong performances by Rogers and Kari Andrew catapulted UH-Hilo to first place in the team competition.
Vulcans win in overtime
Lacey Schreiner's overtime goal catapulted the UH-Hilo women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Grand Canyon yesterday in Hilo. Schreiner's winning goal came in the 96th minute.
UH-Hilo improves to 11-7 overall, 8-2 in PacWest play. The loss drops Grand Canyon to 3-11-2 and 3-5-1.
» UH-Hilo men's soccer game against Grand Canyon was abandoned with 6 minutes remaining in the second overtime period due to darkness. Both teams went scoreless.
» The Chaminade women's soccer team fell to Dixie State yesterday, 3-0 in Honolulu. Chaminade's defense kept the game close in the first half, holding Dixie State scoreless despite allowing 14 shots on goal.
» Notre Dame de Namur outscored Hawaii Pacific's women's team 3-0. Notre Dame de Namur dominated throughout with goals by Kristin Mills, Ashlee Hinojosa and Amy Armijo.
» The Notre Dame de Namur men's team beat Hawaii Pacific yesterday 1-0 in Kaneohe. HPU's defense held firm throughout the second half before surrendering a late goal to David Wulff in the 84th minute.
The win moves Notre Dame de Namur to 8-8-1 on the season, 4-3 in the PacWest. Hawaii Pacific drops to 6-9 and 4-5.
