Honolulu is among the top U.S. metropolitan areas for blog use, defined as an adult who read or contributed to a blog within the past 30 days, according to a survey released yesterday by a national media research firm.
Honolulu was in a tie for fifth with San Diego, with 12 percent of those surveyed having read or contributed to a blog in the last month. The survey included 79 U.S. markets.
Austin, Texas, came out as the top blog market, with 15 percent, followed by Portland, and San Francisco and Seattle. Nationally, 8 percent of all consumers read or contributed to blogs.
Top-ranked cities tend to have a young, tech-savvy population, according to New York-based Scarborough Research, which surveys more than 200,000 adults in the U.S. each year by telephone and mail.
They are likely to be between 18 and 34, with an annual household income of between $50,000 to $100,000.
"Not surprisingly, the cities that rank highly for bloggers are also prominent Internet usage markets," said Gary Meo, senior vice president of print and digital media services. "Austin and San Francisco adults, for example, are more likely than the average to have a broadband connection at home. Additionally, Austin, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle are markets with large high-tech economies."
Buffalo, N.Y., and Pittsburgh, Pa., rounded out the bottom, with 2 percent polled having read or participated in a blog.
