Sculpture unveiled Sunday at UH
In conjunction with homecoming week, University of Hawaii athletic department officials will unveil a bronze sculpture of Dr. Donnis Thompson, the school's first women's athletic director, Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The dedication is scheduled for 4 p.m. on the arena concourse with a reception to follow. Thompson will be recognized during an on-court ceremony prior to the start of the Rainbow Wahine-Louisiana Tech volleyball match at 5 p.m.
The afternoon begins with the Wahine alumnae match at 3 p.m.
Thompson, also a former Hawaii superintendent of edication, was at the forefront of UH's implementation of Title IX in the 1970s and a national leader in promoting women's athletics.
BeachBoys break losing streak
Lucas Duda had three hits and Michael McKenry homered to lead the Waikiki BeachBoys over the Honolulu Sharks 6-5 yesterday in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Field.
Waikiki (9-11) had lost three in a row and eight of its last nine before beating Honolulu (10-9-1).
Yutaka Tamaki earned the win for the BeachBoys, while David Newton struck out two batters in the ninth inning for his first save. Kamehameha graduate Kanekoa Texeira gave up a pair of runs in one inning of relief for the Sharks.
» Mat Gamel had three of North Shore's 13 hits last night as the Honu beat the West Oahu CaneFires 6-1.
Michael Griffin, Stephen Chapman, Jonathan Lucroy and Daniel Worth all paired hits for the Honu (14-6). Blair Johnson, Drew Naylor and Takashi Kamoshida combined to shut down West Oahu (6-13).
Kamehameha girls advance
The Kamehameha girls volleyball team is in prime position for a run at a third straight state title.
Kanani Herring had 15 kills and the No. 1 Warriors knocked off host No. 2 Iolani 25-22, 27-25 last night in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship match to clinch the ILH's top seed in the New City Nissan Girls Volleyball Championships in Hilo.
Kamehameha gets an opening-round bye in the 12-team field. Iolani had previously clinched a berth.
Feldmann, Stubblefield advance
Defending champions Andrew Feldmann and Larry Stubblefield won both of their matches yesterday to advance to today's semifinals of the Aloha Section PGA 4-Ball Match Play Championship at Oahu Country Club.
Also advancing to today's semifinals are the father-son team of Ron Castillo Sr. and Ron Castillo Jr. The Castillos defeated Mike Iyoki-Ron Kiaaina 1-up. Castillo Sr., 71, sank a 30-foot putt to win the hole.
The semifinalists advance to the 18-hole final scheduled for noon today.
Warriors ranked in swimming poll
The Hawaii men's swimming and diving team is ranked No. 19 in the first College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Top 25 Coaches Poll of the season.
The Warriors (2-0) defeated Arizona State twice in a pair of dual meets at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex to begin the season in September.
Warrior golfers finish 13th
The Hawaii men's golf team placed 13th yesterday at the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational golf tournament at the windy Willow Glen Course at El Cajon, Calif.
The Warriors' Ryan Perez carded an even-par final round of 72 to finish with a 228, earning a share of 33rd.
Wichita State took the team title with an 878, led by medalist Ryan Spears' 67--215. Hawaii finished at 295 in the 17-team event.

UH-Hilo tops Dixie State in volleyball
Josimara Pinheiro had 17 kills to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 30-21, 30-27, 30-19 volleyball victory over Dixie State (Utah) last night at Hilo.
The Vulcans improved to 18-5 overall and 9-0 in the league.
» Hawaii-Hilo sophomore middle Lauren Bayer was named the PacWest Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Bayer had 21 kills and was in on seven blocks in the Vulcans' 3-1 win over Chaminade last week.
Vulcans edge Silverswords in OT
Dustin Daley's goal in the final seconds of overtime lifted Hawaii-Hilo to a 3-2 win over Chaminade in a PacWest men's soccer match at the Saint Louis School field.
» Karissa Robertson scored two second-half goals to lead Hawaii-Hilo over Chaminade 3-0 in women's soccer yesterday at the Saint Louis School field.
» At Laie, Brigham Young-Hawaii's Jill Haar and Sarah Welty each scored twice to lead the Seasiders to a 4-1 win over Hawaii Pacific in women's soccer yesterday.
BYUH (10-5-1, 7-1 PWC) outshot the Sea Warriors 10-4. The Seasiders moved into first place with a one-point lead over Hawaii-Hilo, the only team to defeat BYUH this season.
» In a men's soccer match at Laie, the Seasiders topped the Sea Warriors 4-1.
Brian Noguera scored the opening goal for BYUH and assisted on another in the first half to lead the Seasiders.
Vulcans golf teams finish in fourth
The Hawaii-Hilo men's and women's golf teams both finished fourth at the Sonoma State Invitational tournaments yesterday at Santa Rosa, Calif.
The Vulcans' Daniel Kitayama and Jesus Valdivia shared eighth place at 214, 13 strokes behind medalist Eric Justensen of Cal State Stanislaus.
The UHH team finished at 862, 13 strokes behind Chico State (849) among the 10 teams at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club.
In the women's tournament, the Vulcans' Kiilani Matsuyoshi placed third at 156, four strokes behind medalist Lianne Matkin of Western Washington.
UHH shot a 652, 15 strokes behind winner Western Washington in the seven-team event.
