Kona festival good to last drop

If you're considering a trip to Kona and you love coffee, early November would be a good time to go.

The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival begins Nov. 2, offering farm tours, a lantern parade, tastings, art exhibits, workshops and competitions in such skills as coffee picking and label design.

Events take place throughout the Kona area, but the big finish comes at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort, where the Gevalia Kona Coffee Cupping Competition takes place Nov. 7 and 8, ending with the naming of the finest beans of the year. Spectators welcome.

The sixth annual Kona Coffee Culinary Invitational takes place Nov. 9, with local chefs presenting dishes made with Kona coffee as an ingredient. Tickets are $40 in advance; $45 at the door. Call (808) 322-3441.

Visit www.konacoffeefest.com for a schedule of events or call (808) 326-7820.

Halloween fest breaks out wine

Halloween is not just for kids, it's also for those old enough to drink, which the Windward YMCA recognizes with its "Hallo-Wine" tasting and silent auction on Friday.

The event, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Koolau Golf Club, will feature dozens of wines, pupus and entertainment by Ahi Wela. Costumes optional.

Tickets are $50, available at the door, to help provide assistance to children, teens and adults who cannot otherwise afford YMCA programs. Call 261-0808 or visit www.ymcahonolulu.org.
