Johnson shuts down Sharks
Steven Johnson threw five shutout innings and seven hitters had an RBI as the West Oahu Canefires beat the Honolulu Sharks 7-2 in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Field last night.
Ian Gac, Todd Martin and Brian Jerolman paired hits for West Oahu and Craig Gentry scored a pair of runs. Five of West Oahu's seven runs came with two outs.
Brandon Snyder had a pair of hits and scored both of Honolulu's runs.
» Jamie Romak cleared the bases with a double in the first inning and the North Shore Honu beat the Waikiki BeachBoys 8-1 at Wong Stadium in Hilo.
Brett Sinkbeil made Romak's hit stand up, giving up three hits and an unearned run in five innings for the Honu.
Waikiki committed three errors in the game, two by first baseman Lucas Duda.
Warriors split with Thunderbirds
Steven Grgas and Jim Clar each had 16 kills as the Hawaii men's volleyball team beat British Columbia 30-24, 31-29, 26-30, 30-17 in an exhibition last night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
British Columbia got its revenge in the second match, beating Hawaii 29-31, 30-25, 31-29, 30-24.
Andrew Bonner led the Thunderbirds with 21 kills on 46 attempts in the nightcap. Matt Vanzant led the Warriors with 16 kills on 47 attempts.
Ernie Vidinha added 13 kills and Nejc Zemljak dished out 50 assists for the Warriors in the first match. Robert Bennett led British Columbia with 15 kills.
The teams will play two more matches tonight.
Ching way ahead in OCC tournament
Alex Ching shot a 4-under 67 to take the lead after the second round of the Oahu Country Club Men's Invitational yesterday.
Ching, a senior at Punahou, leads Lorens Chan by five strokes and Doug Williams by eight.
George Yamamoto finished 4 over to beat Daniel Park by a stroke for the senior title.
The final round begins today at 11 a.m. with Ching scheduled to hit the course at 12:20 p.m.
Heinemann moves on in West region
Hawaii's Sascha Heinemann beat Nick Meister of UCLA to advance to the round of 16 at the ITA West Region Championships at Malibu, Calif., yesterday.
Heinemann, who is seeded No. 8 in the tournament, swept Meister 6-3, 7-6 and will take on San Diego's Dean Jackson in the next round today.
Hawaii's Jeff Fitch, Craig Faulk and Spence Mendoza all were eliminated from the tournament yesterday.
» Nadia Abdala of Arizona State beat Hawaii's Chloe Bihag 6-2, 6-0 yesterday on the second day of the Wilson/ITA West Region Championships.
Bihag teamed with Sophie Kobuch in the doubles tournament, but lost 8-1 to Riza Zalameda and Yasmin Schnack of UCLA to be ousted. Hawaii's Sophie Kobuch, Julia Sandborn and Marie Tanaka all lost in the first round of the consolation draw.
The Rainbow Wahine are off until they take on No. 2 Stanford on Nov. 20 on Maui.
