Martin makes West Oahu a winner

Cleveland Indians prospect Todd Martin broke open a tie game with a home run in the sixth inning to help the West Oahu CaneFires beat the Waikiki BeachBoys 5-3 in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Field yesterday.

The teams agreed to end the game after seven innings to save their pitchers. It was the seventh game in seven days for the developmental league and it isn't scheduled for a day off until tomorrow.

Martin, who led the New York-Penn League in hitting in the spring, had been in an 0-for-17 slump before his blast. West Oahu's Anthony Hatch helped out with a solo home run in the seventh inning.

Michael Cooper earned the win, while Aaron Jensen took the loss.

» Shingo Matsuzaki, Ryan Ouellette and Chad Thall combined to limit the North Shore Honu to two hits as the Honolulu Sharks won 2-0 in the night game.

Nate Samson and Matt Wieters drove in the runs for the Sharks.

» Kamehameha graduate Kanekoa Texeira will join the Honolulu Sharks and remain with the team for the rest of the season.

Texeira, a pitcher in the Chicago White Sox organization, struck out 58 batters in 52 2/3 innings for the Kannapolis Intimidators during the regular season.

Ownership switch for ABA club

The Hawaii Hurricanes, the state's fledgling professional franchise in the American Basketball Association, have come under new leadership with the season tip-off less than a month away.

The team's operations have been transferred to Pacific Rim Basketball, Inc., taking over for Hawaii Basketball Inc.'s Andrew Moss.

Coach Alika Smith, the former University of Hawaii standout player and assistant, said he remains on board, and will operate team practices up to the scheduled season opener Nov. 11. Smith is working with Ira Harge Jr., in operating the franchise, according to David Patterson, owner of the PR Store.

Patterson had been helping the Hurricanes and is now working with the new entity. Patterson said neither he nor Smith have had contact with Moss recently. He said the group is working on putting together the funding necessary for the team to play this season through investors and sponsors.

Moss could not be reached for comment.
