How to edit your profile on MySpace
Last week I talked about setting up a MySpace account so you could be part of this new-media powerhouse with unlimited marketing potential.
Now that you have your MySpace URL and your display name, I'm going to give you a few hints on editing your profile.
Let's return to your MySpace page. Anytime you want to edit your profile, you will want to go Home and when you are in edit mode, your page changes will display so you can see what you have changed.
» First, choose a layout that's unique to you. Right click on Details & Code. Copy and paste the provided code into the About Me section. Simply click in the box to copy/paste the code. Make sure all of the code is grabbed. Make sure to save your code in a separate table.
Now, select the Edit Profile. Hit the Enter key three times. Key in
and press Enter 10 times. This will help you quickly see where to begin your About Me information later.
After this series of
+enter, type in something about yourself.
» Create a Headline.
The headline is a great place to post your "real Web site or blog. Or, you can use your tag line or a line you use to describe more about you. Then enter more information in each of the fields that follow. Remember to save all changes and to save often!
Enter the characters displayed in the Captcha to confirm the changes you have made. Save all changes each time you make one. Now your profile is updated.
» Forgot something? Want to make another change? Go to Home, Edit, View My: Profile and start over.
Your first friend on MySpace is Tom. He is everyone's first friend. He's the guy who originally started MySpace. Once you set up your site, and your profile, eventually, as you build up friends, you can choose who your top friends are -- people you know.
Although I did, you do not need to keep Tom in your top friends out of loyalty. It's OK to remove him.
When you first started your MySpace page, the background was white. It was very boring, plain -- "unpimped," as they say. At first I liked it because it was nice and white. I had visited a bunch of profiles, and they were a little cluttered, and overwhelming. So I kept my site with a white background. Since the prime reason for using MySpace is to take advantage of its marketing potential, it's important to be unique in your marketing approach. So the white background went away, and now I have a beach scene, because that's who I am. You can add videos, slides, etc. to help people learn what you are about too.
Next week, we'll work on "pimping" your MySpace page.
