Amy Hanaiali‘i receives solid review in New York Times
A
my Hanaiali'i received a good review in the New York Times Thursday for her show at Feinstein's in the Lowes Regency, although her named was misspelled Hanaialali'i throughout the story and Hanaiali'l in the photo caption.
Stephen Holden wrote: "The high point of Tuesday's show was a passionate rendition of
John Fogerty's 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain?' Offered as a mystical hymn to a guardian spirit, it carried almost as much weight as Creedence Clearwater Revival's stirring original version." Also, "When she chirps "Hello, Girls" to the hula dancers as they join her onstage, you hear softened echoes of her fellow Hawaiian
Bette Midler." He added, "Ms. Hanaialali'i (sic), who has revived the traditional falsetto female style known as ha'i, is Hawaii's official music ambassador, and she plays the role well. That means presenting herself as a cosmopolitan pop homogenizer, accompanied by musicians of substance." Amy's musical director
Matt Catingub and
Jeff Peterson, a guitarist in her quartet, were mentioned ... Mountain Apple just released Amy's "A Hawaiian Christmas" album ...
David Nagaishi, operations manager for the Ocean House and Shore Bird in the Outrigger Reef, asked wife Wendy where she wanted to go for a belated birthday dinner recently. David has been in the isle restaurant biz for ages and Wendy, head concierge at the Royal Hawaiian, knows all the good eating spots in town. She picked the new Ruth's Chris on Waikiki Beach Walk. After dinner she raved, make that gushed, to G.M. Jay Kaneshiro: "It's soooo Randy Schoch. Really elegant but comfortable -- for romance or the family." I hope David still has his job after his owners read this and he doesn't have to seek work with Randy, who has the Hawaii Ruth's Chris franchise ...

Podiatrist
Greg Morris, a Stanford grad, is still standing tall over unranked Stanford's 24-23 upset of No. 2 USC last Saturday. Greg, known as the "Stanford Sawbones," specializes in foot and ankle surgery ... Gucci held a luncheon and fashion show of its women's cruise collection at the Kahala Hotel yesterday ...
Josh Holloway and
