Houston, Cubi-Otineru spark Hawaii
BOISE, Idaho » The focus was sharp. The intensity was there from the beginning.
Last night, the road didn't bite back.
Instead, No. 12 Hawaii made quick work of its first of three matches on this trip, taking 90 minutes to sweep Boise State 30-17, 30-20, 30-16 at Bronco Gym.
Just as they had against the Broncos last month at the Stan Sheriff Center, Rainbow Wahine left-side hitters Jamie Houston and Aneli Cubi-Otineru led the way. Houston put down a match-high 19 kills, hitting .500, and Cubi-Otineru added 15; the two had 14 and 12, respectively, in the Sept. 15 contest in Honolulu.
Hawaii improved to 14-3 overall, 8-0 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Wahine take an 11-match winning streak into tomorrow's meeting at Idaho (4 p.m. Hawaii time). Last night, the Vandals (5-2, 9-9) outlasted San Jose State 30-27, 30-27, 23-30, 34-36, 15-9.
"Usually the first game of a road trip is a struggle and it wasn't tonight," Wahine coach Dave Shoji said. "That's a good thing.
"Both of our left-sides (Houston and Cubi-Otineru) had a good night, which is something we needed out of them. We needed to play like we know we can. I thought we kept our focus."
Partly because of injuries, Boise State (4-13, 1-8) had four different starters in the lineup than Hawaii had seen in last month's meeting in Honolulu. Injuries sidelined two of the Broncos' top kill leaders -- sophomore right-side hitter Arlee Tamietti and freshman middle Sadie Maughan -- as well as senior left-side hitter Jamie Claussen.
"Obviously, it was not the team that they wanted out there," Shoji said.
A crowd of 589 saw freshman Alisha King put down 11 kills to lead Boise State.
The Broncos opened Game 1 with a 5-3 lead only to see the Wahine quickly take control for good with an 11-4 run. Hawaii had two of its seven aces during that stretch, one each by Amber Kaufman and Stephanie Brandt.
The Wahine jumped out to leads of 4-0, 7-2 and 8-3 in Game 2 before the Broncos took their only lead at 11-10 when Robyn Hewitt and Kristen Voyson blocked Houston. Houston responded by putting down four kills during an 8-1 spurt that gave Hawaii an 18-12 advantage.
Boise State made one last charge, pulling to within 21-20 before Hawaii ran away behind a 5-0 serving run from Cubi-Otineru. Houston put down the Wahine's final four kills to close it out.
Houston and Elizabeth Ka'aihue served for five straight and Tara Hittle for three to open up a 14-5 advantage in Game 3. It was 28-13 before the Wahine sputtered slightly -- giving up three unanswered points -- but they finished it off on a kill by Jessica Keefe and a block of King by Keefe and Juliana Sanders.
The Wahine finished with a 10 to 8.5 advantage in blocks and 58-32 advantage in digs. Hittle led Hawaii with 16 digs.
The Wahine were to fly today to Lewiston and will face Idaho tomorrow.
"We need to stay focused and continue to handle the road well," Shoji said.
