October's First Friday Downtown-Chinatown Gallery Walk goes pink to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Expect to see venues decorated in pink, some even serving pink drinks. The fun starts on the streets of Downtown, when dancers from Giinko Maraschino pass out hot-pink orchid pins in interesting fashion, from 6 to 8 p.m. Along with the pin will be a coupon for a free yoga class at Open Space Yoga, located in Chinatown.
Over at One Night Stand in the Chinatown Courtyard, visitors are encouraged to "Think Pink!" with watercolor artist Garry Palm, who will be working on a pink hibiscus painting that will be up for sale. If the piece is sold, Palm will donate 10 percent of the purchase price to benefit the fight against breast cancer.
Also on display both at the courtyard and at The Cathedral Gallery are works by from photographer James Anshutz's exhibit "Portraits of Survival," which features artistic portraits of breast cancer survivors. The show features "expressions of strength, hope and empowerment." Part of the proceeds from the exhibit will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Other shows to note include "The Lovelink Exhibition: A Retrospective" at Pacific Traditions Gallery, a collection of community artwork spanning 32 years that focuses on promoting peace. Works from the Lovelink project have toured the globe, exhibiting in such places as New York, Moscow, Bosnia and Australia.
Soullenz Gallery is exhibiting "Labyrinth of the Ridiculous," an examination of the ridiculous phenomena in our everyday lives. Louis Pohl Gallery is showing "Holoholo o Nuuanu," featuring the works of local artists Eric Chandler, Takeo, Carl Pao, Spencer Chang, Paula Rath, Hans Loffel, Imaikalani Kalahele, Hitoshi Hida and Kaui Chun.
Meanwhile, at Ong King Arts Center, which stays open to 2 a.m., check out the graffiti art of EuKaReZT and upcoming artist Ryan Greenly. Slam poet Lee Knight Jr. will take the mic, WUT & JP performs music and seven performers will stage Shel Silverstein's "The Devil and Billy Markham." Ari the clown will juggle, Giinko Maraschino will dance and De La Isla Flamenco will break out of traditional flamenco to offer a theatrical experience.
