Hayashi wins to qualify for nationals

Kevin Hayashi shot a 1-over 72 yesterday at Kaanapali Golf Resort to win the Aloha Section PGA Professional Championship.

Hayashi finished the two-round event at 2-under 140 and qualified for the Professional National Championship to be held in June 2008 in Greensboro, Ga.

Second-place Kirk Nelson (143) and third-place Ron Castillo Jr. (145) also qualified for the nationals.

The tournament is running in conjunction with the Aloha Section Stroke Play Championship. Hayashi, Nelson and Castillo are the leaders in the 54-hole stroke-play event, which concludes today.

Larry Stubblefield holds a two-shot lead at 6-over 148 in the senior division. AJ Molitor leads the super senior division at 176.

Wilder earns cross-country honor

Hawaii's Chantelle Wilder was named the Western Athletic Conference athlete of the week for cross country yesterday.

Wilder won the 4-kilometer Big Wave Invite last week in 14 minutes, 24 seconds. She's won three races in three meets so far this season.

Patacchia, Bruce Irons eliminated

Two Hawaii surfers, Fred Patacchia and Bruce Irons, lost their second-round heats and were eliminated at the Quiksilver Pro France yesterday.

Andy Irons and Pancho Sullivan, who won their second-round heats on Sunday, are gearing up for the third round in the ASP World Championship Tour event today, waves permitting.

Vulcans finish in tie for sixth

Hawaii-Hilo finished in a tie for sixth place with Cal State Stanislaus at the Western Washington Invitational golf tournament yesterday.

Ryan Felix led the way for the Vulcans, tying for 15th place individually at 3-over 219 over the three rounds. He was 11 strokes behind medalist Jarin Todd of Sonoma State.

British Columbia took the team title at 21-under 843. Hawaii-Hilo was 41 strokes behind at 884.

Hawaii Pacific (942) placed 13th, followed by Brigham Young-Hawaii (955) in last place.

The Seasiders' Abel Soares (234) tied for 59th place.

Seasiders end trip with shutout loss

Humboldt State beat Brigham Young-Hawaii 2-0 in a men's soccer match yesterday in Arcata, Calif.

It was the sixth road match in nine days for the Seasiders (5-6), who were outshot 19-10.

Jon Eseman had a goal and an assist for the Lumberjacks.

» Cal State Monterey Bay topped Brigham Young-Hawaii 3-2 in a women's soccer match yesterday at Seaside, Calif.

The Seasiders (5-3-1) lost despite outshooting the Otters 21-12. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak.

Trailing 2-0, BYU-Hawaii got goals from Hailey McKee and Kahanu Ah Puck to tie it up before halftime.

Alexa Page and BreeAnna Bowser both had assists for the Seasiders.

Player of the week

Lauren Bayer, Hawaii-Hilo middle blocker

The sophomore from Texas hit .641 in six games to get the Vulcans off to an undefeated start in the PacWest with wins over Brigham Young-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific.
