He can take it and he can leave it. Today, Farrington fans will take a No. 9 ranking in the Star-Bulletin/KITV-4 Football Top 10.
The Governors returned to the top 10 after a convincing 38-19 win over Kalaheo. Farrington, which didn't commit a turnover, basically shut down a Kalaheo team that scored 26 points at Kahuku in a near upset a few weeks ago.
Last Saturday, Kalaheo's offense scored just two touchdowns, and one of them came with just a few seconds left in the game. Farrington's defense was superlative, but the offense is maturing under first-year starting quarterback Alefesio Iu. The southpaw did his best Steve Young impersonation in Farrington's West Coast offense.
The third-ranked Kahuku Red Raiders are taking notes. The defending state champion -- and four-time defending Oahu Interscholastic Association Red titlist -- struggled with Kalaheo's veer option and could have difficulty with Iu's smooth play-action execution.
"We need to keep working as a team for the Kahuku game," Iu said.
The test will come as the Red Raiders use their fastest linebacker corps in years, led by Alema Tachibana and Paipai Falemalu. They will challenge Farrington's ground attack.
That's why, in hindsight, the preparation for Kalaheo will also pay dividends against Kahuku.
"We thought we could run more on (Kalaheo), but they gave us problems," Okimoto said.
That's when Iu stepped up.
"They played Cover 1 the whole time," the senior said. "I knew our guys were gonna be open. Our O-line played their best game. I'm proud of those guys."
Kahuku, which likes to use all-state safety Shiloah Te'o as a rover of sorts, could also offer some single-safety looks to Iu. The teams will battle on Friday night at Kahuku. It is the homecoming game for the Red Raiders.
Bears lose 1
Linebacker Kyle Kaaihue-Kaimiola, last year's Maui Interscholastic League defensive player of the year, is moving to Arizona with his family.
The senior was one of the key contributors to Baldwin's state-tourney run, leading the Bears to a near-upset of Kahuku in the semifinals.
