Missile destroyer returns from Middle East mission

The Pearl Harbor-based guided missile destroyer USS Chafee returned home yesterday from a deployment to the Western Pacific. The Chafee left Pearl Harbor on April 9 and joined the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group. During deployment the strike group supported operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa. It also participated in exercise Valiant Shield 2007 on Aug. 7-14.

Former Army Chief of Staff Gen. Eric Shinseki, who was born on Kauai, will be the guest speaker at two island events next week.

Shinseki, a 1965 West Point graduate who became the first Asian American to wear four stars, will be the keynote speaker at the Oahu AJA Veterans Council's second annual joint memorial service at 9 a.m. Sept. 30 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

He also will speak at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 1 as part of the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Universal Values for a Democratic Society Endowed Forum Series.
