HHSAA reduces Kealakehe coach's suspension
It wasn't a total success, but Kealakehe boys soccer coach Urs Leuenberger is somewhat relieved that a change was made to his suspension.
The Hawaii High School Athletic Association heard the coach's appeal at its recent executive board meeting. Last Friday, the board announced that Leuenberger's suspension of five years was reduced to two.
"Coach Leuenberger explained his side of the story and took at least some measure of responsibility for his actions," HHSAA executive director Keith Amemiya said. "Additionally, he was less involved in the series of confrontations at the stadium."
Leuenberger's assistant coach at the time, Miles Nakahara, did not appeal his suspension. His suspension remained at five years. The incident during the state tournament, according to both parties, was initiated by Nakahara following a disagreement about seeding procedures.
"Two years is more livable. I was actually surprised that the board showed some courage in reversing its decision," said Leuenberger, who will still be able to coach Kealakehe during regular-season matches.
"The positive thing is they listened on what we had to say, issues were discussed and problems were addressed and will be fixed."
One of the changes includes an invitation to the BIIF to attend the state-tournament seeding meeting.
Tiebreaker concerns
The baseball state tournament's tiebreaker system for consolation games was also discussed at the HHSAA meeting.
Last year, a game ended in a tie due to a 2-hour time limit. Hilo advanced to the next round of consolation play and St. Anthony was ousted because the Vikings accumulated more hits.
There is concern that this sort of tiebreaker is unfair.
Big Island Interscholastic Federation executive director Ken Yamase pointed out that he originated the tiebreaker method because teams in the past relied only on a coin flip.
"My teams lost three times because of that," the former Waiakea athletic director and coach noted.
Playmaker
By night, he is a high school and college referee.
By day, Todd Apo is a mover and shaker. Apo, a councilman, played a large role in securing start-up funding for the newly formed Honolulu County Sports Commission.
Apo assisted mayor Mufi Hannemann by freeing up $100,000 to start the commission, which is comprised of many important players in the prep, college and pro sports community.
"There's a recognition (within the Council) that there's a need for this. We're making both an economic and social investment," he said.
