Nako pulls upset at Kaanapali
John David Nako beat top seed Bradley Shigezawa 1 up yesterday in the first round of the HSJGA Match Play Championship at the Royal Kaanapali Course.
Nako, the eighth seed, plays David Fink this morning with the championship to follow at 1:18 p.m. Kelii Dias takes on Jared Sawada in the other semifinal.
Cyd Okino and Anna Jang face off in a girls semifinal, after Okino beat Tamara Surtees 4 and 3 and Jang eliminated Kristina Merkle 2 up.
BYUH shuts out Chaminade
Jill Haar and Natasha Aiono scored a goal each as the Brigham Young-Hawaii women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Chaminade yesterday in Laie.
The Seasiders (1-2-1) took 29 shots on goal to none for Chaminade (0-3).
» Thimo Lagner had two goals and an assist as HPU's men's team beat Chaminade 4-1 yesterday on Maui.
The Sea Warriors outshot the Silverswords 19-8.
Wilder, Laan claim cross country wins
Siblings Chantelle Wilder of Hawaii and Brandon Laan of Hawaii Pacific won the women's and men's titles at the Brigham Young-Hawaii Invitational yesterday in Laie.
Wilder's win in 18 minutes, 40 seconds in the 5-kilometer women's race was the fifth victory of her UH career as she defended her title in the event. As a team, the Rainbow Wahine placed third behind UH-Hilo and BYUH.
Laan finished the 8-K men's race in 27:28 to lead the Sea Warriors to a first-place finish. UH-Hilo placed second, followed by BYUH.
Shoji headlines Quarterback Club
Hawaii volleyball coach Dave Shoji will be the featured speaker at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda Hotel's International Ballroom.
The weekly luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. with the program to start at noon. The public is invited.
Vierra, Yoshida win surfing title
Kalani Vierra and Blanche Yoshida captured the World Tandem Surfing Tour title with a first-place finish at the tour's final event yesterday in Spain.
Hawaii duos swept the top three spots as Chuck Inman and Tiffany Rabacal placed second and Brian Keaulana and Kathy Terada finished third.
