Vulcans' Daley earns weekly honor

Hawaii-Hilo junior Dustin Daley was named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week in soccer yesterday after scoring all of the Vulcans' goals in 1-0 and 2-1 wins last week.

UH-Hilo beat Chico State and Embry-Riddle.

» Chaminade and La Verne played to a 1-1 soccer tie yesterday, after two overtimes and 110 minutes.

The Silverswords tied the game with a T.J. Meyer header from Nick Smith.

Chaminade (0-3-1) plays Brigham Young-Hawaii on Maui tomorrow in the Hawaii Challenge Cup.

Hawaii-Hilo volleyball team wins in 5

Hawaii-Hilo beat Central Washington in five games last night, winning 30-27, 25-30, 30-24, 20-30, 15-11 at Ellensburg, Wash.

Desiree Agader had 61 assists for the Vulcans, while Hillary Hurley had 19 kills and Fabiane Seben and Josimara Pinheiro had 16 each.

Hawaii women advance in Spain

Hawaii surfers Melanie Bartels, Alana Blanchard, Rochelle Ballard and Megan Abubo were among those advancing to round three after their performances yesterday at the ASP Rip Curl Girls Festival at Liencres-Santander, Spain.

Bartels and Abubo had to surf back into the bracket through round two, but were able to stay alive and advance in 3-foot conditions.

UH's Ako earns Soccer Buzz honor

Hawaii forward Ambree Ako yesterday was named to the Soccer Buzz Web site's Team of the Week -- a weekly all-star team -- after being named MVP in last week's No Ka Oi tournament.

Ako scored three goals -- two game-winners -- in helping the Rainbow Wahine win the tournament.

UH opens another tournament tomorrow at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Garrison joins UH cross country staff

Michael Garrison, formerly the cross-country head coach at Maryland, has been hired as an assistant with the University of Hawaii, coach Carmyn James announced.

The Rainbow Wahine open the season Saturday in the Brigham Young-Hawaii Invitational in Laie.
