Restaurant worker charged with rape
A Waimanalo man appeared in Honolulu District Court yesterday on charges of sexually assaulting a woman in the Kailua fast-food restaurant where he works.
Elia Hauanio, 23, was ordered held on $50,000 bail on two counts of first-degree sexual assault and two counts of third-degree sexual assault. The judge yesterday affirmed that police had grounds to arrest him without a warrant Friday morning. He will appear for a preliminary hearing tomorrow.
The 19-year-old woman told police that she was walking past the Jack-in-the-Box restaurant at 112 Oneawa St. early Friday morning, saw two employees standing outside and asked them for directions. She said they invited her into the store, where she fell asleep in a booth. She said she awoke to find one of the men sexually assaulting her. She said she struggled against him but he raped her, according a police statement to the court.
The store manager told police that the woman arrived at 3:30 a.m. Friday and appeared to be intoxicated. He said they let her into the store, which was open only for drive-through food pickup at the time.
Police arrested Hauanio at his Poalima Street home three hours later, after the victim identified him, according to a statement by officer Ryan Tamashiro.
