Rainbow Wahine tumble to No. 16

Hawaii dropped six spots to No. 16 in the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll yesterday after its 1-2 performance in the ASICS Rainbow Wahine Invitational volleyball tournament last weekend.

All other schools in the top 10 last week remained in the top 10. No. 1 Nebraska (2-0), No. 2 Stanford (1-0) and No. 3 Penn State (2-0) all retained their spots, while USC (3-0) moved up two spots to No 4.

Vulcans defeat Saints in soccer

Megan Pachecano, Karissa Robertson and Karen Weatherby all scored goals to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 3-1 victory over St. Martin's in women's soccer yesterday at Lacey, Wash.

The Vulcans improved to 1-2. The Saints dropped to 0-2.

» The Hawaii-Hilo men's team dropped a 2-1 decision to St. Martin's at Lacey, Wash.

Luis Lanz scored the lone goal for the Vulcans, who fell to 0-3. The Saints improved to 1-2.

» Brigham Young-Hawaii opened its season with a 3-3 tie against Central Washington in women's soccer yesterday in Laie.

Trailing 3-2, the Seasiders' Jill Haar tied it up at 3-all with a goal in the 86th minute, forcing overtime.

Neither team scored in two overtime periods.

Sarah Welty scored BYUH's first goal on a pass from Hailey McKee, while Stefanie Wright, on a long throw-in from Alexa Page, also scored for the Seasiders.

Tadd to take on Nationwide event

BOISE, Idaho » Hawaii golfer Tadd Fujikawa accepted a sponsor's exemption yesterday to play in the Nationwide Tour's Boise Open at Hillcrest Country Club, Sept. 20-23.

Fujikawa has already played in two events since turning pro on July 12. He missed the cut at the Reno-Tahoe Open on the PGA Tour and missed the cut again at last week's Canadian Tour event.

He will be playing for the first-place check of $121,500.

"I am honored and very excited to be invited to play in the Albertsons Boise Open," Fujikawa said in a press release. "To be provided with the opportunity to compete on the Nationwide Tour is a real privilege for me. I look forward to the week of events and teeing it up in Boise."

The Golf Channel will broadcast all four rounds of the tournament.

Wahine going to Olympics

Hawaii water polo players Iefke Van Belkum and Meike De Nooy earned spots in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, yesterday.

Van Belkum, who has two years remaining with the Wahine, scored in overtime to lead the Netherlands over Russia 13-12 to win the qualification tournament.

De Nooy was in goal for the Dutch and played her final season with UH last year.

Owens, Raiola cut by NFL teams

Former Hawaii receiver Chad Owens was one of nine players released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers yesterday.

Kamehameha product Donovan Raiola was also released by the Steelers.

Owens was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL Draft. Raiola went undrafted in the 2006 draft but went to camp with the Rams before getting cut.
