Anna Bannana's opens stage to poetry, film and dance
Anna Bannana's is hosting "Bringing Back Kerouac," a poetry and open-mic night held at the restaurant-bar on the first Tuesday of each month. Poems, songs, short films and interpretive dance presentations are all encouraged. Next week's program features special guests Climbing PoeTree and Sparhla Swa.
Climbing PoeTree, a duo comprising Alixa and Naima, consider themselves poets, performers, printmakers, dancers, educators, bookmakers, muralists, designers and new media artists. They also are known for arts-based political education workshops. Songwriter/musician Sparhla Swa is known for her alternative/acoustic/soul performances.

Fundraiser at club helps autistic kids
Cornerstone Educational Preschool is hosting a party tomorrow at Ocean Club in Restaurant Row, to raise money for its autism programs.
The event, from 6 to 11 p.m., will include pupus, entertainment by Makena and The Gregg Hammer Band, and prize giveaways.
Cornerstone's courses center on communication, social interaction and creative or imaginative play -- three crucial areas of child development affected by autism.

Performers sought for falsetto contest
Aloha Festivals is seeking singers to compete in the annual falsetto competitions held throughout the state.
Performers will sing stories of Hawaiian culture, in the upper registers of the musical scale.
Prizes range from gift baskets, airline tickets and hotel accommodations to a recording contract with Hula Records. Prizes vary per islands. The contest schedule:

Training offered for young runners
Young athletes getting ready for the Niketown 5K are invited to attend free training sessions from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 8, 15 and 22 at Niketown, 2080 Kalakaua Ave. Running specialists will help kids prepare and provide free training logs.
The eighth annual Niketown 5K for Kids will be held Sept. 23, to raise funds for physical fitness programs and playground equipment for schools.
Children must be accompanied by an adult to walk or run 1 or 3 miles. Entry fee is $20, most of which is donated to an Oahu school of the participant's choice. The race is limited to 8,000 entrants. Registration deadline is Sept. 10.
Ballet Hawaii coming to Kapolei
Ballet Hawaii will begin instructional classes in Kapolei on Sept. 6 at the Island Pacific Academy.
Three levels -- creative dance (ages 4 to 5); pre-ballet (5 to 6); and Ballet I (6 and older) -- will be offered on Thursdays and Saturdays.
