Hawaii schools run through Hilo tourney
Hawaii's college volleyball programs had little trouble at the Hawaiian Style Classic in Hilo yesterday, combining to go 4-2 yesterday and 8-4 in the tournament.
Chaminade won both its matches easily, beating Rollins 3-1 in the morning and sweeping Cal State Monterey Bay in the evening. The Silverswords improved to 4-0 for the season.
Hawaii Pacific had a little more trouble with Cal State Monterey Bay, losing to them in five games before drilling Houston Baptist 3-0. The Sea Warriors improved to 1-3 with the win.
The host Vulcans also split yesterday, beating Texas Women's College in four games before falling to Alaska-Fairbanks in four games in the last match of the tournament. UH-Hilo dropped to 3-1.
Tatiana Alvino of Chaminade was the tournament's MVP and teammate Evelyn Bluthenthal was on the all-tournament team. Fabiane Seban of Hilo was the only other Hawaii girl named to the squad.
Chaminade shut out by Bryant
The Chaminade men's soccer team held Bryant scoreless for a half before losing 3-0 yesterday in its opener at home.
Chaminade was winless in 16 matches last year, being shut out 14 times and scoring only two goals.
» UH-Hilo was also shut out in its opener, falling 4-0 to Western Washington yesterday.
