Church musicians to play in Waikiki
Musicians from New Hope Christian Fellowship will entertain the Sunset on the Beach audience tomorrow before the movie.
Performing at the 6:30 p.m. program at Queen Surf beach in Waikiki will be Kanoe Gibson, Miss Hawaii 2003, and her sister, recording artist Maila Gibson, Sam Kapu III, Cory Oliveros, Tiffany Thurston and the New Hope halau and Contemp dance group. Pastor Wayne Cordeiro will host the show.
It will not be a worship service, but will feature Hawaiian music and "positive uplifting music, sharing our team's talent" said John Tilton, of the New Hope Spirit of Aloha outreach initiative.
The movie is the season premiere of the "Flight 29 Down" Discovery Kids television series, which is filmed in Hawaii.
Sunset on the Beach is presented by the Waikiki Improvement Association.
Buddhist monk to speak at prayer
The Rev. Thay Huyen Dieu, who founded monasteries near the places where Buddha was born and reached enlightenment, will be the guest speaker at a Peace Prayer service next weekend in Honolulu.
Dieu, president of the International Buddhist Federation, will speak at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 2 at Jodo Mission of Hawaii, 1429 Makiki St.
The Vietnamese monk built a monastery in Buddha's birthplace of Lumbini, Nepal, after receiving land from the government of Nepal. He also built a monastery in Bodhgaya, India, where Buddha reached the state of enlightenment.
