Wie ready for Safeway Classic
Michelle Wie returns to the links for today's Safeway Classic in Portland, Ore., before leaving professional golf behind to be an everyday student at Stanford University. She was recently assigned to a freshman dorm.
"I think I would be missing out on college life if I didn't stay in the freshman dorm," Wie said. "I think that's where all the drama happens, everything happens."
Wie, who has struggled with a left wrist injury this season, is playing on a sponsor's exemption. The 17-year-old reflected on her season yesterday, which has been a struggle.
"It was kind of a fine balance between trying to play through it and trying to rehab ... I felt like I learned a lot from each of the tournaments and I've gained a lot of experience, and that's what I'm out here for. I want to gain experience. I want to learn from my mistakes," Wie said.
» Moanalua High School student Tadd Fujikawa continued to pursue his dream of professional golf yesterday at the Canadian Tour's Jane Rogers Championship in Mississauga, Ontario. He shot a 4-over 74 and trails the first-day leaders by 10 shots. He is tied for 122nd in the 156-player field and will need to go low today to play through to the weekend.
English scores 14 in Canada's win
Former Hawaii guard Carl English scored 14 points and had three assists to help Canada to an 80-73 win over Venezuela yesterday in the FIBA Americas tournament at Las Vegas.
English shot 6-for-13 from the field, and made two of his four 3-point attempts as Canada (1-1) evened its record in the tournament.
Canada continues preliminary-round play today against the Virgin Islands, and closes the round against the U.S. tomorrow at 9 a.m. Hawaii time. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
Falcons drop Vulcans in soccer opener
Sarah Martinez scored two goals to lead Seattle Pacific past Hawaii-Hilo 4-0 in a women's soccer season opener in Seattle.
The Falcons outshot the Vulcans 24-1.
» The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's team was picked as the preseason favorite to win the Pacific West Conference title in a poll of conference coaches released yesterday.
The PacWest also named its preseason men's and women's teams, including offensive players of the year Jill Harr of BYUH and Drew Geis of Hawaii-Hilo, defensive players of the year Tessa Chesser of Grand Canyon and Michael King of HPU, and goalkeepers of the year Suzanne Hung of Dixie State and Franco Corutenuto.

Hemmings to present award to Rarick
State Sen. Fred Hemmings will present the Waterman of the Year award to longtime friend and surfing organizer Randy Rarick tonight in front of a crowd of surf business leaders and ocean environmental organizations at an event hosted by the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association at Dana Point, Calif.
Hemmings was Waterman of the Year in 2002.
Nanooks beat Sea Warriors in opener
Alaska-Fairbanks defeated Hawaii Pacific 34-32, 30-22, 28-30, 30-26 in the volleyball season opener for both teams at the Hawaiian Style Classic in Hilo.
Cari Kahn had 13 kills to lead HPU.
