Castle High student wins shopping spree
Sheralynn Humel, a sophomore of Castle High School, won the $1,000 grand prize of the "Back to School Shopping Spree" Sweepstakes at Pearlridge Center. The contest was part of the Young Adult Summer Reading program, sponsored by Hawaii Pizza Hut and the Hawaii State Public Library System. Humel was a contest finalist from Kaneohe Public Library.
The second-place winner was Antonio Cortes, a seventh-grader at Innovations Charter School on the Big Island. He was a finalist from the Kailua-Kona Public Library.
Third place was won by Micah Kealaiki, an eighth-grader at Kamehameha Middle School -- Hawaii Campus, and a finalist from the Mountain View Public & School Library on the Big Island.

The YWCA of Oahu received a $50,000 grant from the Bank of Hawaii to renovate Laniakea, the agency's downtown location.

The Hawaii branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development awarded $97,405 to the Oahu Resource Conservation and Development Council. The funds will be used to assist the Waipahu Festival marketplace Business Incubator and Training Center, which opens Sept. 15. The Waipahu Community Association is sponsoring the project to provide jobs and micro-enterprise opportunities.
