Red Cross names Shannon top volunteer
Patti Shannon was named American Red Cross Volunteer of the Year for Oahu for increasing the number of Red Cross Youth Clubs to 18 from three in local high schools. Club members participate in service projects for their schools, communities and the world, including mentoring youth in lifesaving skills and disaster preparedness, teaching children how to swim and sending care packages to troops.

The Coral Reef Outreach Network announced the following nominees for its third annual Hawaii's Living Reef Awards, which honors work to protect the ecosystem.
Commercial Division -- Recreation: Donovan Domingo of Maui Dreams Dive Co., Nancy Emerson's Surf School, Scott Burch of Mokulua Kayak Guides and Trilogy Excursions; Tourism: Atlantis Submarines, Maui Ocean Center; Outrigger Hotels and Resorts; Retail: Costco, Diamond Bakery and Ziggy Livnat of For the Sea Productions.
Noncommercial Division -- Government agency: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Aquatic Resources Division; Sen. Fred Hemmings; Educational institution: Mike and Terri Fausnaugh, Ocean Awareness Training Certification Series, Damien Kenison; Nongovernmental organization: Alyssa Miller of Malama Maunalua, Liz Foote of Project Sea-Link and Reef Check Hawaii.
