Pace visits wounded troops
With little fanfare, the nation's top military officer visited installations on Oahu Saturday, offering support to those with post-traumatic stress from the Iraq war.
Marine Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, spoke at Kaneohe Marine Base, Pearl Harbor Submarine Base, Camp Smith and Tripler Army Medical Center, according to a news release yesterday on the Pentagon Web site.
Pace told service members and veterans that psychological wounds are just as devastating as physical wounds. "It doesn't matter if it was psychological or physical, you were wounded in service to your country and we need to do all we can to make you better," he said at Tripler.
Pace said he is concerned with the stigma associated with psychological trauma, and called for discussion of the problem at all levels of the military.
Pace passed through at the end of a trip that took him to Spain, Djibouti, South Korea and Japan.
Lava continues northward flow
Lava from Kilauea continued advancing to the northeast with some spreading to the north yesterday, U.S. Geological Survey scientists said.
Inflation indicating a buildup of magma began at the summit just before midnight Saturday and was followed at 2 a.m. yesterday by inflation at Puu Oo.
Cameras monitored by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory also recorded more lava-sparked fires in forest land to the northeast.
The site of the eruption that began July 21 is closed to the public due to hazards that include possible methane explosions and toxic fumes.
