Hole-in-the-wall eateries
City Councilman Donovan Dela Cruz and his eating/writing partner Jodi Endo Chai have updated "The Puka Guide."
Subtitled "100 Hawaiian-Style Hole-in-the-Wall Restaurants," the guide takes in snack shops, bake shops, lunch counters, okazu-ya, saimin stands and all manner of humble places to grab a good, inexpensive meal.
It's a statewide listing that presents information in quick takes: "Where Stay?" "When Open?" -- plus information on parking and seating.
You also get tips on the best things to order and some "Inside Scoops" -- Yama's Fish Market, for example, delivers within a certain range, for orders over $60.
"You never know what hidden culinary treasures you'll find at these off-the-beaten-path eateries," chef Alan Wong says in the foreword.
"The Puka Guide" (Watermark Publishing) sells for $9.95 at bookstores and other retail outlets, or order online from www.bookshawaii.net. Call 587-7766.
