Kai gets an assist in U.S. rout
CHICAGO » Former Kahuku and University of Hawaii soccer standout Natasha Kai contributed an assist in the U.S. women's national team's 6-1 rout of New Zealand yesterday.
Kai fed Abby Wambach in the 91st minute to close out the scoring. Wambach and midfielder Carli Lloyd each scored twice in the team's next-to-last tune-up before next month's women's World Cup in China.
The Americans host Finland in their final international friendly in Carson, Calif., on Aug. 25.
Hilo wins Senior League opener
Hilo opened pool play in the Senior League World Series (ages 14-16) with a 17-2 win over Saipan yesterday in Bangor, Maine.
After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning, Hilo scored 12 runs in the top of the fourth -- sparked by Blake Amaral's two-run homer -- and five more in the fifth. Keaka Blaine Pilayo went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Jeremy Crivello drove in three runs. Erik Hernandez picked up the win.
Hilo is scheduled to play Cartersville, Ga., today at 2 p.m. Hawaii time.
