TROLLEY FOLLY CUTS JUICERICHARD WALKER / RWALKER@STARBULLETIN.COM
A trolley hit a utility pole in Waikiki yesterday, cutting off power to condos, businesses and intersections for several hours. The power outage affected 25 customers, not including individual tenants in condominiums with single meters, said Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman Peter Rosegg. HECO crews turned off power to replace the damaged utility pole, which was causing a strain to other utility poles. No equipment or wires fell to the ground in the accident, Rosegg said. The trolley hit the pole on Ena Road while trying to avoid another car at about 10 a.m., police said. Ena Road was closed between Kalakaua Avenue and Hobron Lane as crews replaced the pole. Police directed traffic at several affected intersections, from Kalakaua and Ala Wai Boulevard to Kalakaua and Ala Moana Boulevard. HECO expected to have power back to customers by 10 p.m.
