Student to receive scholarship named for isle soldier
Damien High School graduate Justin Sambueno will be the first recipient of a scholarship named after 1st Lt. Nainoa Hoe, a Kamehameha Schools and University of Hawaii Army ROTC graduate who was killed in Iraq two years ago.
The $1,000 award is sponsored by the Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation and Ohelo Kaopio will present the award Tuesday to Sambueno at the entrance to Schofield Barracks' Battle Command Training Center .
Hoe was an Army platoon commander in Mosul when he was killed in 2005.
Sambueno, 18, the son of Jason and Muriel Sambueno, will attend DePauw University to pursue a degree in business.
Brig. Gen. Steven A. Hummer relinquished command of Marine Corps Base Hawaii on Friday. Col. Mark A. Dungan, currently the deputy commander, assumed the duties of commander as Hummer prepares to transfer to Special Operations Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla.
