Last year: Sherri Steinhauer won the tournament for the third time, and the first since it became a major. Steinhauer, also the 1998 and 1999 champion, beat Cristie Kerr and Sophie Gustafson by three strokes.

Last week: Natalie Gulbis won the Evian Masters in France for her first LPGA Tour victory, beating Jeong Jang with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff. The 24-year-old Gulbis, sidelined by a back injury earlier this summer, passed Brittany Lincicome for seventh place in the U.S. Solheim Cup standings.

Last year: Tiger Woods won the tournament for the second straight year and the fifth time in seven years, outlasting Stewart Cink with a birdie on the fourth playoff hole. The victory was the fourth in Woods' string of seven straight PGA Tour wins.

Last week: Jim Furyk successfully defended his Canadian Open title, taking the lead with a hole-in-one and finishing with a 7-under 64 for a one-stroke victory over Vijay Singh. Furyk took the No. 2 spot in the world ranking from Phil Mickelson with the victory at Angus Glen in Markham, Ontario. ... Argentina's Andres Romero followed his third-place finish in the British Open with his first European tour title, a three-stroke victory in the Deutsche Bank Players' Championship in Germany.
