Sharing secrets
Motivational speaker Lisa Nichols shares personal empowerment techniques in two appearances next month.
Nichols is founder of Motivating the Teen Spirit, producer of "Ladies Can We Talk" and co-author of "Chicken Soup for the African Soul."
She speaks on "Living the Secret in Hawaii: Creating Your Ultimate Joy" at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Japanese Cultural Center. Tickets are $25 at the door.
On Aug. 18 she conduct a daylong workshop at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Tickets are $175 in advance, $197 at the door.

HPR's Art Song winners named
Five singers have been chosen winners of Hawaii Public Radio's Art Song Contest and will perform in a recital in September. The winners are:
» Sarah Oppenheim-Beggs of Maui, a singer and voice teacher with more than 25 years of experience.
» Leighanna Edwards of Maui, an actress and lyric soprano.
» Jason Healey, who works for the state Department of Taxation but has a Master's of Music degree in voice from the Peabody Conservatory.
» Stephanie Shade, a member of the Honolulu Chorale and participant in the Hawaii Vocal Arts Ensemble.
» Margaret Simpson, an opera singer.
All will perform in HPR's 10th Annual Art Song Contest Winners' Recital, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Atherton Performing Arts Studio, 738 Kaheka St. Tickets are $10, $5 seniors, military and students. Call 955-8821
Parkinson gets Ballet Hawaii post
John Parkinson has been named executive director of Ballet Hawaii.
Parkinson has a background with the Joffrey Ballet and Trisha Brown Dance Company, most recently serving as artistic administrator for Hawaii Opera Theatre.
He replaces Steve Knox, who is moving to Oregon after 20 years at Ballet Hawaii.
Mission Houses to train docents
The Fall Docent Training program for Mission Houses Museum begins Aug. 14, with sessions from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. every other Tuesday for 12 weeks.
Cost is $85, which includes materials, speakers and museum membership.
