Honolulu Bulls win U14 girls title in Denmark
Gabby Yates scored the lone goal and Malia Brennan earned the Golden Boot Award as the top player in the girls under-14 division as the Honolulu Bulls edged LdB Malmo of Sweden 1-0 Saturday in the 26th Dana Cup in Hjorring, Denmark.
The Bulls were one of two U.S. squads out of 47. They went undefeated in eight matches with goalie McKenna Davidson unscored upon.
"We're very proud of all the girls," co-coach Rick Chong said in a call from Copenhagen yesterday. "I believe this is the first time a Hawaii team has won. It's a huge deal."
Both of the Honolulu Bulls entries -- girls U14 and boys U14 -- were playing up one age group. The boys team won its pool but lost in the Round of 32 of the 124-team division.
Both Yates and Brennan are center/forwards. Other members of the team are: sisters Jayci and Kayla Cabael, Lauren Stollar, Brooke Lovelace, Kianna Akazawa, Caprice Dydasco, Kadi Lee, Staci Mihara, Teisha Nacis, Sierra Nicols, Steffani Tanaka and Tracee Fukunaga. Kerry Miike is the other coach.
