Ayat waived by Jets
Justin Ayat's stint as a kicker for the New York Jets lasted less than a week. Yesterday, the NFL team waived the Kamehameha alumnus whom they had signed as a free agent on July 24.
As a Warrior, Ayat made 191 of his 209 extra-point attempts and converted 59 of 89 field goal attempts, including a career-long 56-yarder.
Benson wins junior surf championship
Tonino Benson of Kailua-Kona won the Lost Pro Junior title yesterday at the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, Calif.
In small but contestable conditions, Benson posted a score of 13.94 to defeat Chris Waring of California (12.87), South Africa's Jordy Smith (12.17) and Haleiwa's Mason Ho (11.77).
Judokas golden at U.S. Open
Hawaii judokas continued their successful summer with six gold and two bronze on the first day of the Junior U.S. Open Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Winning their respective classes in female competition from Hawaii Tenri Judo were: Teniya Alo (bantam 23kg); Mindy Chow (juvenile A 53kg); Taylor Ibera (juvenile B 44kg); and Chrissy Chow (juvenile B 52kg). Earning bronze was Czarina Pineda-Abaya (bantam 23kg).
Winning gold in male competition were Hawaii Tenri's Bishop Rapoza (bantam 31kg) and Shobukan's Jacob Palimo'o (juvenile A 36kg). A bronze went to Shobukan's Nahoa Salera (juvenile A 53kg).
