Waipahu foundation announces grants
The
Waipahu Community Foundation, in its 16th year of operation, gave annual (2007 through 2008) awards to
Waipahu High School, $31,500;
Friends of Waipahu Cultural Garden Park, $9,600;
Waipahu Jack Rabbits, $7,000; and
Leeward YMCA, $5,000.
First-quarter (July through September) grants included August Ahrens Elementary School, $2,065; Waipahu 3rd Branch Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Boy Scouts Troop, $3,850; Boy Scouts Troop 32, $2,900; Waikele Elementary School, $3,500; Cub Scout Pack 321, $2,698; and Honowai Elementary School, $3,500.
The foundation also awarded $1,000 scholarships to 10 Waipahu students: Geraldine Agcaoili, Ashley Ballesteos, Nezzie Basuel, Arbie Campuspos, Sheila Claudio, Bradley Fernando, Mikhail Halemano, Ruth Manuel, Vanessa Tapiceria and Veralyn Ulep.
Charles Shephard of Keaau, a teacher at Waters of Life Public Charter School in Kurtistown on the Big Island, is one of 52 secondary school teachers who will attend the 2007 Presidential Academy for American History and Civics this summer.
The academy focuses on pivotal turning points in history and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.
