Kim wins medalist honors in U.S. Juniors
Staff and wire reports
LAKEWOOD, Wash. » Former Hilo resident Kimberly Kim followed an opening-round 62 with an even-par 72 yesterday to win medalist honors in the 2007 U.S. Girls Junior Championship at Tacoma Country and Golf Club.
"Yesterday, I was hitting my shots much better," Kim was quoted in a story on usgirlsjunior.org.
"Today, I missed a lot of shots. The front nine (actual second nine), I hit like two fairways. On the back side, I kind of got my driver more in the fairway.
"Yesterday I putted so good. Today, I made the long putts and the short ones I couldn't make."
Kim, the reigning U.S. Women's Amateur champion, who is seeded No. 1 for today's match-play competition, finished two shots better than South Korea's Ha Na Jang, who fired a 5-under 67 yesterday.
Mina Harigae, of Monterey, Calif., is the third seed after a 69 yesterday put her at 137.
Honolulu's Stephanie Kono struggled to a 4-over 76 in the second round and finished 11 shots behind Kim at 145.
Also making the cut from Hawaii were Honolulu's Cyd Okino (73-74--147), Kahului's Elyse Okada (72-76--148) and Ayaka Kaneko (74-76--150), also of Honolulu. The lone Hawaii golfer not to make the cut was Wailuku's Kyung Kim.
In the U.S. Junior Amateur Boys Championship at the Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta, Mo., yesterday, failing to qualify were Honolulu's Lorens Chan, (76-77--153) and Kauai's T.J. Kua (78-78--156).
