117 Army reservists returning on Aug. 3
After spending 12 months in Iraq, 117 soldiers of the Army Reserve's 657th Area Support Group will return home Aug. 3. The Army Reserve unit was located at Logistical Support Area Anaconda and its missions was to support the needs of the 150,000 people assigned there.
The unit managed the recreational facilities, processed more than 24,000 bags of laundry, supervised the preparation of 335,000 meals, coordinated the transportation of more than 62,000 personnel, managed the disposal of 600 tons of trash. A homecoming and awards ceremony will be held at Schofield Barracks on Aug. 5.
The 25th Infantry Division's 25th Combat Aviation Brigade's 2nd Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment -- now deployed to Iraq -- has been recognized as the Army's best aviation unit.
The award was presented July 10 by Brig. Gen. Frank Wiercinski, the division's deputy commander for support at Forward Operating Base Warrior in Kirkuk. Lt. Col. James Barker, squadron commander, said the unit prior to deployment transformed from the 1st Battalion (Attack), 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, to the "Fighting Sixth." Training included deployments to the Pohakuloa Training Area in January 2006 and the National Training Center in April 2006 where the unit practiced aerial gunnery, close combat attacks and other convoy training with the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
