Transpac contenders follow Pyewacket
The skippers of the biggest boats in the 44th Transpac race made their first important decision yesterday -- betting on the fastest route from Long Beach, Calif., to Hawaii.
Pyewacket's Stan Honey seems to favor the southern line, moving out of California in a southwestern direction at 13 knots. The veteran navigator's decision influenced other contenders, as Doug Baker's Magnitude 80 and the Peligroso skippered by Mike Campbell and Dale Williams followed in Pyewacket's wake.
Bob Lane took a chance with Medicine Man, but dipped closer to the route chosen by the other big boys after trying the north early on.
Kalilikane, Chan going to Vegas
Bronson Kalilikane and Alex Chan teamed up to card seven birdies on their way to a 67 at the ESPN National Golf Challenge at Turtle Bay yesterday.
Kalilikane and Chan beat Raymond Primacio and Taki Thompson by two strokes to win the gross division and earn Hawaii's lone spot in the regional finals on Aug. 12 at Las Vegas.
Michael Sylva and Dennis Hallam advanced to Las Vegas by winning the net division with a 63. William Paik and Dennis Lee came up just short with a 65.
» Kathy Tsukada and Lily Yao lead the gross division of the championship flight after the first day of the Waialae Women's Invitational. Tsukada and Yao shot 74s on the par-70 layout to lead Teri Lui by four strokes.
Yao has the low net score after the first day with a 65. Tsukada's handicap of six left her with a 68.
Wiktorsson, Frick win in Sweden
Hawaii divers Mats Wiktorsson and Magnus Frick won titles over the weekend at the Swedish Diving Nationals.
Wiktorsson took the platform event for Jonkopings SS while Frick finished seventh. Frick turned it around by winning the 1-meter springboard for Polisens IF.
Both Warriors were competing for club teams.
Mosley chosen as Chaminade coach
Blake Mosley has been named as the new women's tennis coach at Chaminade.
Mosley had played and coached extensively around the world and served as the assistant coach at Texas A&M Corpus Christi and as the head tennis professional at Padre Isles Country Club.
The Silverswords have long been at the bottom of the Pacific West Conference behind national powers Brigham Young-Hawaii, Hawaii Pacific and UH-Hilo.
Mosley takes over for Chris James, who left the program after a 2-12 season in which the Silverswords were swept by each of the teams in Hawaii.
