Patacchia to take on Irons
Frederick Patacchia edged Chris Ward yesterday to advance to the fourth round of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay in South Africa
Patacchia defeated Ward 11.50-10.17 in one of five third-round heats completed yesterday to set up a meeting with fellow Hawaii surfer Andy Irons in the next round. Eight-time ASP world champion Kelly Slater also won his third-round heat.
Bruce Irons still has a third-round heat ahead of him and will try to join Patacchia, Andy Irons and Pancho Sullivan in the fourth round.
» Janna Irons, cousin of Bruce and Andy Irons, lost in the semifinals of the Roxy ASP Women's World Longboard Championship in Biarritz, France. Irons lost to eventual world champion Jennifer Smith 11.00-9.00.
Sun wins again at Evans Invitational
Iolani graduate Hongzhe Sun picked up his second victory at the Janet Evans Invitational yesterday, winning the 100-meter backstroke on the final night of the meet at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium.
Sun, a member of the U.S. World University Games team, won the 200 backstroke on Friday and added the 100 yesterday with a time of 56.18 seconds, just ahead of Simon Burnett's 56.21.
The Kamehameha Swim Club team of Mitchell Chong, Beau Pickering, Brett Gomes and Andrew Kinimaka won the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:09.59.
Randall Tom of Maui finished eighth in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley finals.
Warriors second in Las Vegas tourney
The Hawaii Warriors girls basketball team from the Big Island placed second in the Girls eighth grade/13-and-under division at the National Junior Basketball Las Vegas Spectacular, held June 29-July 1.
The Warriors went 3-0 in its pool and defeated the Ventura County Spartans 49-41 in the semifinals. The team then lost to the Riverside Lady Hawks 49-38 in the final.
Members of the team are Ashlyn Flores, Ciera Pacheco, Anuhea Wall, Shaylyn Kahawai, Thea Hanato-Smith, Dawnyelle Awa and Bobbi Montibon. The team was coached by Dominic Pacheco and Bobbie Awa.
