No. 64 upsets top seed at Publinx

WHEATON, Ill. » Defending champion Casey Watabu of Kapaa, Kauai, yesterday rebounded from an opening round 80 to shoot a 4 under 68 and easily make match play with a total of 4-over 148 at the U.S. Public Links Championship.

Watabu's opener with Brent Paladino of Kensington, Conn., was one of 17 matches suspended due to darkness, and scheduled to resume this morning.

Sean Maekawa of Paauilo, Hawaii, also saw his match suspended.

Samuel Cyr of Makawao, Maui, beat Daniel Woltman of Beaver Dam, Wis., 4 and 2 to advance.

Andy Roberts beat Mark Harrell 3 and 2 in the first round of match play, becoming the first No. 64 seed to upset a No. 1 since 2002.

Waimea's Max Bonk (155) and Kapaa's Layne Morita (175) did not make the cut in the qualifying rounds.
