HPU graduate adviser wins scholarship

Deborah L. Nakashima, Hawaii Pacific University associate dean for graduate advising, is one of five people in the nation to receive the Academic Advising Summer Institute Scholarship. It was sponsored by the National Academic Advising Association. The Kailua resident has been a communication and careers skills instructor at HPU for more than 20 years.

Keanalu "Nalu" Chartrand of Hilo, 19, was presented with a National Spirit of Youth Award for turning his life around after being incarcerated at the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility. The award was given by the Coalition for Juvenile Justice. Chartrand attends Hawaii Community College and works in Hilo as a youth/peer counselor for a nonprofit substance abuse treatment agency, and a personal assistant for a social service agency.

Nine Chaminade University faculty members were accepted as Faculty Resource Network scholars this summer at New York University. They are Drs. Pierre Asselin, Richard Kido, Allison Francis, Joel Kawakami, Paulo Martins, Nanette Schonleber, Peter Steiger, Eiko Tyler and Chitha Unni.
