Kahuku High student wins poetry contest
Keoni Storey, an 11th-grader from Kahuku High School, is Oahu's grand-prize winner of the Eighth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Poetry Contest. The International Peace Poem Project, based on Maui, sponsors the contest statewide each year, asking all students from kindergarten through 12th grade in public and private schools to write on peace and nonviolence in honor of King.
This year, more than 1,300 students statewide entered the contest, with more than 250 winners.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu named students from Campbell High School and Iolani School as their "High School Bigs of the Year."
The group awarded Jester Galiza of Campbell and Lisa Gao of Iolani with a $500 scholarship each from the Jack in the Box Foundation. They were recognized for their commitment to help younger children with schoolwork and become their role models.
Galiza has been a Big Brother for two years at Kaimiloa Elementary, and Gao has been a Big Sister at Ala Wai Elementary for four years.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu is a nonprofit youth mentoring organization that focuses on helping children grow into responsible adults.
