Library Booksale celebrates 60th anniversary
Old books, rare books, specialty books ... book lovers know they can expect to uncover some treasure at the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale.
This year's event, the 60th, begins this evening with a preview sale for Friends' members from 5 to 8 p.m.
The show runs through July 8 at the McKinley High School Cafeteria, offering more than 100,000 items -- CDs, DVDs and videos as well as books.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 6, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 8. Closed on the July Fourth holiday.
Discounting begins Thursday, with prices cut by 10 percent. Next Friday, the discount is 25 percent; July 7, 50 percent. On closing day, items will sell for 50 cents.
From 5 to 8 p.m. next Friday, several local children's authors will be available to sign their books.
All proceeds -- they totaled $150,000 last year -- benefit the state's public libraries.

Classic surf items surface at auction
Got vintage surf stuff? Find out what it's worth during the Hawaiian Island Vintage Surf Auction July 20 and 21. A few spots are being held open for select items to be evaluated in "Antiques Roadshow"-style appraisals taking place from noon to 4 p.m. July 20. So dust off those personal surf-themed collector items and bring them in for a free, professional appraisal. It's first come, first served, so get there early.
The surf auction, held in conjunction with the Hawaii All-Collectors Show, is sponsored by QuikSilver and is being held at the Blaisdell Center with about $250,000 worth of coveted surf items up for bid. A portion of all sales will go to the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation Scholarship Fund.
Those outside of Hawaii will be able to bid via a live online auction on eBay.

Orchid society holds preview
The Kaimuki Orchid Society Orchid Show and Plant Sale will have a "sneak preview" of some orchids, along with the flower's advisors, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Kahala Mall. It's all in preparation for the society's show in late July.
The annual orchid show will be held 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 21 and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 22 at St. Patrick's School. It will be the place to be to learn new techniques or start a new hobby.
Workshops will include:

» "Fragrant Flowers"
» "Orchid Flower Arranging."
There will be hourly drawings for door prizes of beautiful orchids, valued at up to $50.
