Patacchia advances at Rip Curl
Hawaii's Fred Patacchia Jr. won his second-round heat in the Rip Curl Search surf contest yesterday at Arica, Chile.
Patacchia beat Dayyan Neve 11.40 to 10.00 in 6-to10-foot surf at the El Gringo surf break to advance to the third round.
Patacchia joins fellow Hawaii surfers Andy Irons, Bruce Irons, Pancho Sullivan and Kekoa Bacalso in the third round.
Bruce Irons, Sullivan and Bacalso all won their first-round heats previously and went directly to the third round. Andy Irons, who placed second in his first-round heat, previously won his second-round heat.
The Association of Surfing Professionals' World Championship Tour contest resumes today, conditions permitting.
The winner will earn $30,000 and 1,200 ratings points. Second place gets $18,000 and 1,032 points.
