Hernandez playing with Team USA
Hawaii catcher Landon Hernandez is playing with the USA Baseball squad in its ongoing 2007 summer tour as part of a tryout for the national team.
Hernandez is one of nine players competing for two spots as alternates for the Pan American Games team. The players will know Monday if they make the team.
Yesterday, Hernandez started and had an RBI and a double against North Adams (Mass.).
Sheppard to compete in Brazil
Hawaii sophomore Emily Sheppard was one of 21 women to qualify for the Canadian team that will compete in the Pan American Junior Track and Field Championships next month in Brazil.
Sheppard, from British Columbia, was one of two high-jumpers to make the team. The Rainbow Wahine had a qualifying mark of 5 feet, 8.75 inches during the trials.
Sheppard won the high jump at both the indoor and outdoor Western Athletic Conference championships this past season.
Catricala mentioned for Ping! team
Hawaii's Vinnie Catricala earned honorable-mention honors on the Ping!Baseball All Ping! Freshman Team as a designated hitter.
Catricala started 36 games last season, hitting .307 with 27 RBIs and 24 runs. He was named second-team All-WAC and a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American.
UH-Hilo signs 2 softball players
Hawaii-Hilo completed its softball recruiting class for the 2008 season yesterday with the addition of two signees.
Amanda May was an all-Southwestern League pitcher for Temescal Canyon (Calif.) High School, and was named MVP of the Riverside County High School All-Star Game. She joins teammate Lauren Holmes in the Vulcans' recruiting class.
Valerie Briones was a two-time first-team all-conference selection at Ohlone (Calif.) Community College and was twice named team MVP.
