The state of our art

Now in its 57th year, the "Artists of Hawaii" exhibit still generates tremendous interest within the local art community. Some 383 artists submitted 901 works for consideration, and 77 pieces now grace the Honolulu Academy of Arts gallery walls.

Of the 54 artists chosen for the show, nine were singled out for their exceptional work by juror Russell Ferguson.

"Dan" by Jennifer Callejo won the Violette Wong Hu Award, for amateur artist based in Hawaii.

Eli Baxter's "Self-Portrait" took the Jean Charlot Foundation Award for Excellence. The award was established to promote the arts through the encouragement of new art.

"Untitled No. 10" by Marc Thomas won the Melusine Award for Painting, which was named after a medieval figure in France who built things of beauty in the night. The award was established in memory of the late painter and arts patron Gerry Clark.

"Diver," by Hal Lum, took the Cynthia Ayre Award, which was named after a former Honolulu Academy of Arts staff member.
