McDonald's raises $53,000 for charity
McDonald's restaurants collected more than $53,000 for
Ronald McDonald House Charities Hawaii during the 5th annual World Children's Day last November. Ronald McDonald House Charities provides assistance to families with seriously ill children.
The Hawaii Women's Legal Foundation awarded the following grants to help women and children in need: Surfrider Foundation, Oahu Chapter, $5,000; KAMP Hawaii -- Life Mentoring Program, $2,500; Lanakila Rehabilitation Center, $2,500; Outreach for Grieving Youth Alliance dba Kids Hurt Too, $4,000; U.S. Veterans Initiative, $2,000; and the Institute for Human Services, $4,000.

St. Francis School received $156,978 from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation of Reno, Nev., for improvements to its chemistry, biology and physics laboratories. The foundation has also funded science lab renovations at Saint Joseph School in Hilo and an observatory at Chaminade University of Honolulu.
Melvin Machado and Jim Newport, Honolulu consultants for Booz Allen Hamilton, received their company's top community service award in Washington, D.C.
