WAC confirms Hawaii tourneys
The Western Athletic Conference confirmed at its board of directors meetings yesterday that Hawaii will host the WAC volleyball tournament in 2008 and the conference baseball tournament in 2009.
The WAC Council, made up of the league's athletic directors, recommended UH host those tournaments at its annual meeting last month. Also, Louisiana Tech will host the 2008 baseball tournament.
"Those have been approved," Benson said. "Whatever we've announced was confirmed (yesterday)."
Also, it was earlier announced that UH will host the 2008 softball tournament.
Benson said the rest of the board of directors meetings will be devoted to "long-range planning."
"We'll be looking at issues down the road that may be in front of us five years from now. TV is obviously an issue, revenue distribution, and there's a sportsmanship piece," Benson said. "Membership is something we always look at, though that is not pressing now."
Benson said he had no new news on whether Hawaii will have a 13th opponent for football this fall. UH athletic director Herman Frazier said he would give two prospective opponents until the middle of this week to accept a proposal, or Hawaii will go with a 12-game schedule.
Frazier, Benson and ESPN have been trying to attract an opponent with a nationally televised game on Oct. 20 at Aloha Stadium. There were no takers by a May 31 self-imposed deadline, but two schools were considering the offer, Frazier said last week.
