Red Cross offers swim classes
The Hawaii chapter of the American Red Cross is offering free summer swimming classes at Ala Moana Beach Park beginning June 12 for adults and June 16 for children.
Adults classes, for ages 14 and up, are divided into groups of nonswimmers to beginners, advanced beginners (those who can float, kick and know most swimming strokes) and intermediate (competent swimmers who want to improve). Classes will be held from 5:15 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through July 19 (no classes July 3 to 5).
Children ages 4 to 14 will be divided into three groups by age and experience. Classes will be held Saturdays from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. through July 21.
Classes meet on Magic Island near the showers and lifeguard station.
Registration is required. Pick up a pamphlet at Oahu Jamba Juice stores, register online at www.hawaiiredcross.org or call 739-8151 and leave a message to have a registration form mailed to you.
The free swimming program has been offered for more than 40 years.
Adult volunteers are needed. Call 739-8131 or e-mail info@hawaiiredcross.org.
Teen volunteers needed
Teenagers interested in helping with Red Cross swimming classes while learning about water safety are needed for the Summer Buddies TeenVolunteer Program.
The six-week course, which begins June 16, teaches first aid, CPR, ocean and water safety, and leadership skills in classes held from 8:15 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays at Ala Moana Beach Park.
For the first hour of each day's program, the teen volunteers help certified water-safety instructors teach children to swim as part of weekly keiki swim classes. The rest of the time is spent on a fitness run/swim and classes held on the beach.
Cost is $25. Call 739-8151 or visit www.hawaiiredcross.org.
