Oahu churches host free concerts
Some Oahu churches are offering hospitality to their communities in the form of free summertime concerts.
» Downtown workers can enjoy a lunch-hour respite Wednesdays at the Summer Recital Series in St. Andrew's Cathedral at Queen Emma Square. The 12:30 p.m. organ concert by John Renke will follow the 12:05 p.m. Eucharist service. Listeners may bring lunch or purchase one for $5.
» "Give Me Liberty," a multimedia program of patriotic and sacred songs, will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Koolau Baptist Church, 45-633 Keneke St., Kaneohe. It will feature tenor Jeremy Vegter, a soloist with the Milwaukee Opera Theatre and other Wisconsin symphony orchestras, and his wife, Alisha, who have performed concerts in 20 cities.
» A June 15 concert will showcase organist Chelsea Chun, a Juilliard School graduate just returning from a year as Fulbright scholar in Taiwan, and harpist Melody Lindsay, who performed at the World Harp Congress in Ireland. The 7:30 p.m. concert at St. Andrew's Cathedral is sponsored by the Hawaii Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
» The youth choir of Kahikolu Church in Napoopoo, Big Island, will sing at 7:30 p.m. June 16 at Kawaiaha'o Church. The concert will follow a daylong cultural music workshop for children and youth choirs who will demonstrate what they have learned in a 6 p.m. performance of music and dance.
