A gem of a First Friday

First Friday is mostly about the art, but this month, visitors can stop by the new Jungle Gems store for its grand opening and enter to win a 77-carat ruby necklace.

The jewelry chain will keep its downtown location, at 12 S. King St., open 5 to 9 p.m. for the monthly artwalk event.

Other happenings include the openings of "The 2007 Hawaii Artist Exhibition," juried by Frank Sheriff, at Bethel Street Gallery; "The Fashion of Weight" at Nuuanu Gallery at Marks Garage; "Sufferation: Notes on Compassion, Endurance, Love" at thirtyninehotel; and "Little Moments, Big Magic: Creating Friendships Through Art" at The Cathedral Gallery, which features artwork by youth from Big Brothers/Big Sisters who participated in the Honolulu Academy of Arts' "Art to Go" program.

At the ever-lively Ong King Arts Center, art by elementary students will be on display. There will also be "live art" -- that means body painting -- by Erin Paris. After hours, from 9:15 p.m. to 2 a.m., the center will feature SEGUYN and his Sun Drum Village Ensemble. Headliners for the night will be local reggae band Black Square.
